Bio: Growing up, I always loved sports and staying active, and as I got older, this transformed from playing football to lifting weights in the gym. After many years of contemplating, I took the plunge in 2024 and competed in my first bodybuilding competition at the ICN Hawke’s Bay Champs, where I was crowned Overall Miss Figure.
Over the next 5 months, I continued competing and refining, securing more wins while facing a few hiccups. Despite moments of self-doubt, I pushed on, determined to make my country proud after being selected to compete as part of Team New Zealand at the World Natural Games in Canberra at the end of 2024.
By the time the WNG rolled around, I was confidently sporting my best physique to date, and when the time came, I stepped onto the stage feeling completely at ease, knowing that I had done everything I could and that whatever the outcome, I’d be proud of what we’d achieved. To my absolute surprise and delight, I managed to win Ms Classic Figure Novice, Ms Figure Rookie, Ms Figure O/52kg… and after some generous support and encouragement from the judges and community, I made a last-minute appearance on stage, securing the Overall Ms Figure title and being awarded my ICN Pro Card!
I enjoy the discipline and challenges of preparing to compete in a bodybuilding show and love the message it sends to women. We can be both strong and beautiful. Not only that, I feel blessed to have met the most incredible, supportive people in the bodybuilding community. It may be a competition, but at the end of the day, it comes down to being better than you were yesterday, and sportsmanship always wins.
Fun facts about me:
– I own a pole and aerials studio and am much more coordinated in the air than on the ground.
– I am an absolute foodie and have travelled worldwide, tasting everything on offer.
My top 3 tips to becoming a pro:
- Find a coach who knows what they’re doing; it’s more than just having the biggest muscles onstage. You need to learn how to present yourself to the judges and find someone who boosts your confidence and knows how to pose like a Pro.
- Be prepared to grow! It may sound silly, but it’s called bodybuilding for a reason: take the time to work on your physique and take on feedback that is given. Ladies, don’t be afraid of the number on the scale; more muscle = higher baseline weight. If you want to stand up against the Pros, you will have to grow.
- Have a strong support system. Bodybuilding is more than a physical sport; it requires a lot of discipline and sacrifice. You will have to say no to things, and your priorities will have to change if you want to succeed. This can all take a toll mentally, so if you’re truly committed to achieving your goals, make sure you have a village behind you that understands and shares these goals. And once the work’s all done, don’t forget to remind them how much their support means to you.
